Save Local Waters
We would like to introduce you to one of the local organizations we support:
Save Local Waters is a collaborative initiative aimed at protecting and improving the water quality of local rivers and streams in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Led by several local organizations, including the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati, Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Ohio EPA, the program encourages individuals, businesses, and communities to take action to reduce stormwater runoff and prevent pollution.
The program focuses on several key areas:
- Education and Outreach: Save Local Waters provides resources and information to help individuals, businesses, and communities understand the impact of stormwater runoff on local water quality. This includes workshops, training programs, and educational materials.
- Rain Gardens and Rain Barrels: The program promotes the use of rain gardens and rain barrels to capture and filter stormwater runoff before it reaches local waterways. These practices help reduce the amount of pollutants and contaminants carried by stormwater.
- Stream Restoration: Save Local Waters supports stream restoration projects to improve the health and stability of local waterways. This includes projects such as bank stabilization, stream channel design, and habitat restoration.
- Green Infrastructure: The program encourages the use of green infrastructure, such as permeable pavement and bioswales, to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality. These practices help manage stormwater and reduce the need for traditional gray infrastructure, such as storm drains and pipelines. You can find many of these at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Save Local Waters also hold a Rain Barrel auction each year and Colorful Cupboard Painting has been involved with the auction for the last 5 years. Each year, artists from all around the community submit a detailed plan for what their rain barrel will look like. As many as 250 individuals, schools and local businesses submit these ideas. These artists donate their time and supplies to make these amazing works of art happen. These barrels are on display at the zoo in the Botanical garden for approximately 30 days, usually the month of April. This year, the auction raised over $12,000 for education and conservation efforts. If you would like to learn more about Save Local Waters, you can visit their website at SaveLocalWaters.org.
